2022 Postal promotions

Earlier this week at the National Postal Forum, the USPS announced the upcoming 2022 Postal Promotions. While the categories have remained the same, we can expect to see some big changes in 2022 as it relates to duration and discount percentages.

While specific details have yet to be released for each promotion, here’s a quick overview of what is changing in 2022. Be sure to bookmark this page as we will be updating each promotion as more info is released!

Tactile, Sensory and Interactive Mail Piece Engagement (TSI)

Discount Amount: 4% off eligible postage

Registration Period: 12/15/21 – 07/31/22

Promotion Period: 2/1/22– 07/31/22

Eligible Mail:

  • Marketing Mail Letters and Flats
  • Non-Profit Letters and Flats
  • First Class Letters, Cards and Flats

Tactile, Sensory and Interactive Mail Piece Engagement otherwise known as TSI for short, is meant to highlight the physical aspects of mail and create greater customer engagement. So how do you qualify?  

Some key points from the USPS include:

  • The use of visible and distinguishable specialty inks
  • Specialty Paper that evokes one or more of the following experiences (scent, sound, taste)
  •  Interactive foldable/dimensional pieces

Emerging and Advanced Technology

Discount Amount: 2-3% off eligible postage

Registration Period: 1/15/22 – 08/31/22

Promotion Period: 3/1/22 – 08/31/22

Eligible Mail:

  • Marketing Mail Letters and Flats
  • Non-Profit Letters and Flats
  • First Class Letters, Cards and Flats

The Emerging and Advanced Technology promotion allows mailers to engage in the newest digital technologies. However some of these technologies do come with a high barrier to entry. This is why the USPS has made the decision to implement a tiered discount model, giving a larger discount to some of the technologies that require more of an upfront investment.  

The 2022 Promotions guidelines have yet to be released but in that document we can expect to see a definition of each technology and some of the nuance of a 2% discount vs a 3% discount.  

Earned Value

Discount Amount: .02 credit for each BRM, CRM, and ShareMail piece

Registration Period: 2/15/22 – 03/31/22

Pieces counted: 4/1/22 – 06/30/22

Agree to credits: 7/1/22 - 9/15-22

Eligible Mail to be counted:

  • BRM
  • CRM
  • ShareMail

Earned Value encourages the use of both reply mail and ShareMail. As of now there are no changes to this promotion. Marketers can use this link to see last years’ requirements.

Mobile Shopping

Registration Period: 7/15/22 – 12/31/22

Program Period: 9/1/22 - 12/31/22

Discount Amount: 2% off eligible postage.

Eligible Mail:

  • USPS Marketing Mail letters and flats
  • Non profit USPS Marketing Mail™ letters and flats

With Mobile shopping the mail piece must include mobile technology that can be read, scanned, or activated by a mobile device and leads the recipient to a mobile-optimized shopping website with the ability to complete a financial transaction.

 

With the recent rise of QR Codes this promotion is very interesting for mailers that allow consumers to purchase a tangible advertised product from the website that can be mailed/shipped. The USPS has put together an example of mobile shopping in action here.

Informed Delivery

Registration Period: 6/15/22 – 12/31/22

Program Period: 8/1/22 - 12/31/22

Discount Amount: 4% off eligible postage.

Eligible Mail:

  • USPS Marketing Mail letters and Flats
  • Nonprofit USPS Marketing Mail letters and Flats

The USPS has not released full requirements for 2022 Informed delivery yet. However, they have made two large changes by increasing the discount and extending the timeline this promotion is active. Perhaps this was a way to offset some of the postal increases we may see over the next few years.
