Our Strategy ...

Our Strategy for reducing postage without decreasing the size of the mail file is accomplished as follows:

A stats file is created to identify all possible BMC/SCF's.
The report is reviewed by the Data Director to determine a break even minimum.
The file is then sorted according to the minimum level determined.

The goal is to force as much mail to the SCF as possible, therefore eliminating the BMC and saving at least three days in delivery time. By accomplishing this, we're also able to more accurately control a mail piece's in-home date.

Another notable difference: Our customers pay a fixed rate for freight per thousand whether the mail is moving to a BMC or an SCF. (The distance is not a factor. I.e., Mail moving to California is no different than mail moving to the Philadelphia BMC.)

Using the above strategy, savings typically come to 3% to 7% for postage, and a 5% to 20% for freight.

ICS has tested numerous mail files using a 5 sorts method. The following information is actual data from a past mailing showing the savings in postage along with total cost, including freight.
